Metal Clad Hoop Drum

The "nib" of a Montblanc fountain pen

Well, this is somewhat unusual -- full metal cladding on both counterhoops. You don't see that every day. Actually, I can't remember ever seeing it.

eBay item no. 320335057972 comes with little description to help us determine its provenance. So, we're going to have to use a little detective approach from what we can see.

The following factors point to late 19th to early 20th century:

a. full length metal screw on the snare mechanism (appears to be a relatively late development in the evolution of snare mechanisms -- facilitates easier tightening when the drum is strapped onto the player);

b. relatively large vent hole reminiscent of the Thompson & O'Dell (Boston) drums of 1872-1905 (see, e.g., "Thompson & Odell Co. Drums", this blog, March 21, 2008);c. visible seam sans tacking;

d. hooks instead of drilled holes (the hooks look similar to those on the turn-of-the-century Thompson & O'Dell drum pictured in that article);

e. wire-wrapped cloth snares (I've seen them on several drums but have not yet been able to put a date range on them);

f. leather ears with fountain pen nib-like connectors (not sure about dating these).

The size is reported to be 16" (diameter) x 10" (height).

If you haven't seen this yet, you're in for a treat. J. Scott Johnson of Indianapolis (aka Professor Sound) has assembled a major collection of information about everything that affects the sound of a drum: wood type, construction, tuning and seating, head type, drum size, bearing edges, shell interior -- more information than most may have though possible. And it's all available at his website Prof.Sound's Drum Tuning Bible v3. Check it out.

Close friends and the Colonial Musketeers have been donating money, groceries, gas and visa gift cards, but it is evident that there is a need for more.

On January 31st at the Company of Fifers and Drummers Hall, we are asking for the support of the fife and drum community. There are many ways to help; donations of gas cards, visa gift cards, or just having your corps show up to play can make a big difference. Help support a fellow fife and drum friend in need.

Caveat Emptor -- "Civil War" Drum Questioned by Reader

eBay item no. 320332676205, recently sold for $1,350, was described by the Seller kristimforet( 10) as "CIVIL WAR DRUM 1st QUARTERMASTER FORCES Union RARE". But one reader of this blog wrote to question the authenticity of this drum.

Also, see a virtually identical paint pattern at I.R. SHAHID ENTERPRISES' website selling rope drums made in Pakistan. And, see the side drum (item no. 2098) offered by J. Arthur Pvt Ltd.

The Seller described the drum as follows:

This is truly a RARE item! This is a drum of the 1st Infantry Regiment of the U.S. QUARTERMASTER FORCES. The 1st Infantry Reg. eas composed of civilians organized to defend the quartermaster's depots in the Nashville garrison. A picture of their flag and colors is attached. It's regimental colors were manufactured by the contractor John Shilleto of Cincinatti.

This beautiful drum appears to be all handpainted. The sash around the eagle head reads "1st REGT INFANTRY". The shield appears to have had "QM" on it at one time. The drum stands 15" tall and has a 15" diameter. This is a very large drum. The top drum head also has some writing on it. It reads: "1st REGT. QM. FORCES" and around the edge of the top of the drum head it reads: "JOHNSONVILLE TENN. 1864 NASHVILLE TENN. 1864" Both drum heads are in excellent condition. There is no major damage on the drum.

The National Flag pictures boasts the honors the reiment garnered for helping in the defense of Johnsonville and Nashville in Novemebr and December of 1864.

I have not had this item appraised but I have seen similar drums sell for $5000.00 - $10,000.00.

POSSIBLE WARNING SIGNS:

First, let us say we don't know for sure that this drum is not authentic. But we have questions. Further, eBay reports the Seller has been a member since January, 2006, but the Seller has only 10 ratings -- indicating that the Seller has not been an active eBayer.

1. the drum is very dirty -- nothing we've seen ever has been this dirty -- the condition almost suggests it was deliberately dirtied to cover the relative newness of the drum and its painting;
2. the lettering on the banner is of unusually poor quality and in a font that did not exist in 1864; it looks to have been over-painted, too white;
3. the stars in the field above eagle's head are not stars but dots;
4. the union shield should have 13 stripes -- this one has about 10;
5. the blue background appears to go all the way around the drum -- it should cover only about 180 degrees;
6. the counterhoops look too wide;
7. the ears look as if they could be washed to reveal a white color -- characteristic of Pakistan manufactured drums;
8. the banner is non-standard, too long and flowing far too much;
9. the drum just does not look authentic.

1814 Abner D. Stevens Drum

We are writing to you on the recommendation of Jim Ellis (Cooperman) of Vermont .... We have a drum which descended in our family which has a paper label inside reading "Abner Stevens, 1814, Pittsfield, Mass Fifes Tamboreens & Bass & Military Drums, All sizes and prices made at his American Drum & Factory"; also written in pencil on the inside is a note saying "New heads put on by Albert H. Fruman (or Truman), Sept. 7th 1891".

It is in otherwise original condition with red painted rims, approximately 16" tall with tackhead design of a spokestar surrounded by a circle with diamond design above and below and banded by two vertical tackhead borders. It was taken apart for a move and the rope is no longer usable. There are 3-4 leather ears?

We are interested in selling it and have been advised not to attempt to put it back together as a collector would prefer to do it him or herself.

...

With kindest regards,
K.A.

Notes:
1. Re Albert H. Fruman, there is such a name listed in the 1870 census born about 1868, residing 1870 in Buchanan, Iowa. See . Re Albert H. Truman, no similar information.
2. Note the substantial craquelure.

1861 Jacob Stewart (Pittsfield, Mass.) Brings $2,025

eBay Seller chainshot-nyv( 1359) describes this 1861 beauty (eBay item no. 190277745078) as follows:

A beautiful untouched Civil War drum measuring 13 3/4" tall and 15 1/4" in diameter with hoops on. In pristine untouched condition with original ropes, heads and leather keepers. Plain maple body with red painted hoops. Great label on the inside "Jacob Stewart- Military and Toy Drums- Banjoes-Tambourines, &c.Water St., Pittsfield, Mass. with large inked date "1861". Superb untouched maple patina, never cleaned or monkeyed with in anyway. I traded a Connecticut Historical Society out of this in 1983 and have kept it stashed ever since. Some tears on the bottom head as seen in the scans. Need the space for incoming stuff so regretfully this old friend must find a new place to live. Probably was for one of the Western Massachusetts regiments like the 52nd which was from that area.

1861 Haynes Drum Stolen on eBay for $78

Some lucky collector (8***8( 27)) just picked up a steal on eBay (item no. 170295227836) for $78: an 1861 Haynes drum (relabeled/over-stickered ca. 1881 with a Wm. E. Chandler label), 16 3/4" across and 9 7/8" tall.

Here is the evidence that it's a Haynes drum (see the word "Haynes" on the portion of the understicker visible beneath the oversticker):

George Washington's Drummer Boy

In a little known grave in south-western Marion County, Indiana, lie the remains of an old soldier traditionally acclaimed as "George Washington's drummer boy." This is the grave of Sergeant John George, a Revolutionary War veteran of the First Battalion of the New Jersey Continental Line.

Through extensive and alert research by Chester Swift of Indianapolis into Revolutionary war records, muster rolls, field reports, pension records, etc., there is evidence that Sergeant George might have been the personal drummer boy of Washington's Headquarters Guard during a large portion of the Revolutionary War.

John George was born in Raritan, New Jersey, on November 11, 1759. On January 1, 1777, at the age of 17, George enlisted as a private in Captain John Flahaven's company of Col. Matthias Ogden's First New Jersey Battalion. On September 8th of that year, Private George, who was listed on the company's rolls as a drummer, fought in his first battle, a short engagement at Clay Creek, which was a prelude to the important Battle of Brandywine. Later, Ogden's battalion was to participate in the battles of Germantown and Monmouth, serving as a part of the famous Maxwell Brigade.

The Maxwell Brigade served during the entire war under the personal command of General Washington and was considered to be one of the elite units of the American army. According to John George's service records, he served his first three-year enlistment as a private and a drummer with the brigade at a salary of $7.30 a month. When his three-year enlistment expired, George reenlisted as a sergeant in Captain Aaron Ogden's company of the First Battalion (Maxwell's Brigade) for the duration of the war.

The First Battalion wintered with Washington at historic Valley Forge in the snows of 1777-78. It was also present at Yorktown when British General Cornwallis surrendered his command in October of 1781. After the actual fighting ended in the war, Sergeant George continued to serve with the Continental Army until the peace treaty was signed in 1783. Records indicate that he was discharged along with the last of Washington's Guard at New Windsor, New York, in June of 1783. He and other members of the Guard were decorated with the badge of Military Merit by Washington in recognition of their more than six years of faithful service to his commander.

After his discharge from the army, Sergeant George migrated to Mercer County, Kentucky, to receive his 100 acre veteran's land grant for his wartime service. His Kentucky farm was near the historic old frontier settlement of Harrodsburg. The old veteran farmed his land grant for over fifty years. While farming in Mercer County, George married and raised a large family. In 1821, George applied for and received a Revolutionary War pension for his military service almost forty years previous. He first received nine dollars a month, but his pension records indicates that this was later increased to twelve dollars because he had been a non-commissioned officer.

At the death of his wife in Mercer County, George migrated to Perry Township in Marion County, Indiana, to reside with his daughter and her husband. This was in June of 1838, and the old drummer was now about eighty years of age. His daughter had married Peter Stuck and their residence was just east of where the campus of Indiana Central College is now located.

The old soldier lived with the Stucks until his death on November 28, 1847. He was buried in an early Perry Township cemetery, Round Hill Cemetery, now at the intersection of Epler Road and South Meridian Street. His grave is just a few yards from the main entrance of the cemetery and is marked with the usual simple government stone.

Down through the years, the older residents of Perry Township have maintained that Sergeant George was definitely a drummer boy of Washington's Guard and many claimed to have seen a certificate signed by Washington personally, confirming George's assignment as a drummer with the Guard. The certificate has been lost for many years, but the research of Revolutionary War records indicates that John George could have been the Guard's drummer for more than half of the war.

The Great old soldier's great-great grand son, Colonel Walter H. Unversaw now lives in Kokomo, and is chairman of a memorial fund that is raising money to erect a suitable monument at the grave of Sergeant John George. The monument will be a life size figure of a Revolutionary war drummer boy, honoring the "Legendary" drummer boy of George Washington, now buried in an almost forgotten grave in Indiana.

Drum Taps in Dixie, Memories of a Drummer boy

Drum Corps of the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery

Prelude -- The Drum's Story

Yes, I am a drum, and a very old drum at that. My leather ears are twisted and brown. My shiny sides are scratched and marred. My once beautiful white head is patched and blood-stained. Yet, I am loved and tenderly cared for; have my own cosy corner in the attic and am better provided for than many of the brave men who fought for the Union. So I am content. I have lived my life. We ever ready for duty. Made lots of noise. Have led men on the march and in battle. Now I am laid aside, growing old like all the boys of '61.

Liveauctioneers Bidder at Disadvantage to Floor Bidder

The long and the short of it:

I found a drum I liked on the Internet. It was set to go up on auction on January 10 at Susanins in Chicago. The opening bid was to be $75 and the estimated value was $150-$250. See "1876 Klemm & Brother Bass Drum (Philadelphia)"

Lot 688028 was described as follows:

LATE NINETEENTH-CENTURY KLEMM & BROTHER RAWHIDE DRUM. Circa 1870s, Philadelphia, with various handwriting on the interior with dates "March 19, 1876". Manufacturer's tag on inside of drum. With two drumsticks Height: 24" Diameter: 24".

So, on December 31, 2008 at 04:25:17 I placed a bid through Live Auctioneers for $225.

Live Auctioneers' website approved and recorded my bid.

Come the day of the auction and the drum went for $225. I am a winner, or so I thought. Not so fast.

I contacted Susanin's because although I was sure I had won the auction, I had not received any confirmation or request for payment.

It was then that I learned the sad truth. A floor bidder bidding on the day of the auction, 10 days AFTER my bid, took home the drum for $225!

How could this happen? Shlomi Rabi, Consignor Services at Susanin's, explained the awful truth -- how this could have happened: my December 31 bid of $225 through Liveauctioneers was entered on the day of the auction at the starting estimated value of $150 (why not $75?). A floor bidder could have responded with $175, to which Liveauctioneers would have responded by doling out another $25, bringing my bid to $200. The floor bidder could have responded at the $225 level. And then Liveauctioneers, being out of ammunition, could have folded and left me with nothing while the floor bidder walked off with my prize for the bid I made 10 days earlier!

That's just not fair. And it would not have happened that way on eBay where all bidders stand on equal footing. Even eBayers using sniper services are constrained at the final seconds to operate within eBay's bidding system thus assuring equality of opportunity for all bidders and precedence of earlier-in-time bidders. No such guarantees apply when bidding through Liveauctioneers.com.

A Liveauctioneers Internet proxy bidder has NO CHANCE against a live floor bidder. I've complained about this kind of disadvantage before (see "Sempf & Ottes Drum (NYC))", this blog, Sept. 17, 2008).

The solution? Unfortunately (for Liveactioneers), the solution might be to place a bid directly with the auction house. A better solution is to be a floor bidder or participate live on-line or by telephone. Otherwise, all we're doing by bidding on the Internet is providing a bottom, an insurance policy of sorts, that the item being auctioned sells to someone.

And that, friends, just is not fair.

IMO.

Helpful Website by Lee Vinson (Boston Symphony Orchestra)

W. Lee Vinson, percussionist, Boston Symphony Orchestra, lecturer (percussion) at Boston University Collge of Fine Arts, and vice president of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society has an interesting and informative website loaded with content, including articles he's written, warmups, exercises and technical routines, and photos and information about some of the drums in his personal collection.

Here is a sample of some of the drums and Lee's brief but interesting commentary about them.

George B. Stone Field Drum

George B. Stone, whose son George Lawrence Stone was better known as a teacher and author, was probably the most prominent drum builder in Boston in the early 20th century. This drum, built in 1927, has a beautifully preserved maple shell and the original wire wound silk snares. Despite the fire engine red color, it has the kind of big, warm sound you would expect from an 80 year old maple drum.

Thompson & Odell Snare Drum

This is the BSO's oldest snare drum! Kept for many years by Frank Epstein, it has now come into my possession. While it is dusty and in need of repair, this drum tells quite a story in many ways.

Thompson & Odell was a Boston based musical instrument manufacturer and music publishing company from 1884 - 1909. Many of their instruments were produced by third parties and merely distributed by Thompson & Odell as was the case with this drum.

This drum has seen multiple modifications over the years. I believe this may have begun its life as a rope drum or perhaps a rod tension drum with no posts attached to the shell. The snare throw-off and maroon colored paint were also added at some point. While the reinforcing rings inside of the drum are now unattached, the manufacturers label is still intact and legible.

This drum is currently awaiting a thorough cleaning and a new snare side head. I'm still researching Thompson & Odell so hopefully new information will follow!

Duplex Thumbscrew Snare Drum

Listed in Duplex catalogs as either the 'Thumbscrew Orchestra Drum' or the 'Improved Thumbscrew Band and Drum Corps Drum', this drum requires oversized 15.5" calfskin heads. The 6" x 15" size suggests that this instrument was either a large concert drum or a small field drum.

While similar models were produced by other prominent companies of the day including Leedy and George B. Stone, the particular throw-off on this drum was a feature available only from Duplex. The throw-off lever is stamped "PAT. APLD FOR" which places this drum sometime after 1913.

This document reads:

"Be it known that I, ROBERT C. DANLY, a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snare-Tensioning Devices for Drums..."

Background:

In 1920, a patent was issued to Robert C. Danly for his invention of the Ludwig Pioneer Snare Drum. The Ludwig Pioneer model was manufactured by the Ludwig & Ludwig Drum Company during the golden era, known as the "Jazz Age". The Ludwig Pioneer featured the first cam-operated tensioning device, which allowed the adjusted snare strings to be easily moved into a set or release position.

1931 MILITARY FIELD DRUM MAKES ITS MSO STAGE DEBUT

A 1931 rope-tensioned military field drum donated to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra makes its stage debut in Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique in the hands of its lifelong player.

An amateur percussionist and member of the South Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Mr John Marsh will join the MSO’s percussion section to perform a long drum roll at the end of the fourth movement which Berlioz wrote especially for this type of instrument.

MSO percussionist John Arcaro said “We’re absolutely delighted to receive such a treasured gift from Mr Marsh. With its original rope, leather straps and natural skins, the Drum produces a unique and authentic military sound. It’s in excellent condition.”

The field Drum and its owner will make their appearance in the MSO’s concerts on 12, 13, 14 December at the Arts Centre, Hamer Hall conducted by Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Oleg Caetani.

Speaking about his field Drum, Mr Marsh said “I’m very pleased to donate it to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.”

“I want it to be used, and in donating it to the Orchestra, I’m ensuring that it will be cared for and played for many years to come.”

Now in his eighties, Mr Marsh has owned the Drum since it was commissioned by his father as a gift for his eighth birthday. He has played it constantly throughout his life, in school, university and community concerts, both sharing a long and rich history together.

The Drum was made in Charlestown, Massachusetts by William F. Mackintosh. It is typical of the rope-tensioned field drums for military and civilian use that were used in the 1800's and during the American Civil War. Music played an important role in motivating the troops before, during and after conflicts on the battlefield. Towards the end of the 19th century, metal or rod-tensioning became popular and remains so in modern drums today.

The MSO welcomes donations of property which address significant gaps in its instrument bank, or if you wish to donate to the MSO Foundation, please contact Jessica Frean, Philanthrophy Manager on 03 9626 1107.

1931 MILITARY FIELD DRUM MAKES ITS MSO STAGE DEBUT

William H. Guthman's Incredible Drum Collection

The drums of William Guthman, sold with a portion of his substantial collection of militaria and Americana, are pictured below, all from the catalog of The William H. Guthman Collection, Part II: Militaria and Americana, Thursday October 12, 2006, The Frank Jones Center, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Bill Guthman was a historian as well as a collector. In fact, one could say that he was a collector because he was a historian. He was fascinated by every piece he acquired, and he researched each new find with avid interest. It was this intense desire to uncover the story behind the object that made his collection so uniquely his.

Bill started collecting on weekend trips outside Manhattan, where he worked for a prominent retailer of girls’ frocks. Unable to confine his pursuits to the weekend, he began hunting in the city on his lunch hours, up and down Second and Third Avenues. And then, unable to confine these pursuits at all, he gave up his day job to become a full-time dealer and collector. As with any good collector, his enthusiasm for and joy in collecting bordered on obsession. But perhaps less usual, his passion was contingent on sharing the excitement – houseguests lucky enough to happen upon Bill in the throes of examining a new acquisition were quickly engaged in its study, and were then frequently treated to a tour of parts of his collection as well. He simply couldn’t bear to let others miss out on the fun.

As his family, we had the privilege of living amidst this passion and engagement every day. Life was a little more exciting when, upon each trip down the stairs, we were confronted by General Wolf, wilted gracefully in his picture frame, and casting his nobly resigned eye upon us as he met death one more time.

Although he started out focusing on guns, swords, and other paraphernalia of war, as he matured as a collector Bill became interested in an increasingly wide range of nonmilitary objects. He took up collecting ceramics, which most often bore decorations with patriotic or historical themes: Castleford teapots adorned with molded eagles, “old blue” Staffordshire plates with historic statehouses and other landmarks transfer printed onto their surfaces, and great rarities such as the “No Stamp Act” teapot. He also began to fill the rooms of his home with maple, pine, or cherry furniture made for solid, prosperous – but never grand – farmers, merchants, and craftsmen.

Bill loved quirky things, as is evident throughout his collection in the “make-do” features of many forms and media. One of his favorite items, which held pride of place on a living-room table, was a candle holder made from a cut-down mortar shell. He was also especially fond of chairs and tables with personality lent by painted finishes, ingenious repairs, or commemorative dates. That said, his infallible eye lit upon more traditional forms as well, such as the majestic Queen Anne arm chair and the eagle-inlaid desk included in this auction. In short, Bill could not resist a magnificent object, regardless of what exactly made it so.

When his furnishings and accessories were well in hand, Bill began to decorate his walls. Initially he searched out American folk-art paintings, but later replaced them with McKenney and Hall lithographs of important Native American leaders, complementing them with the superlative catlinite pipes hanging above and beside them. His great love of Native American art and artifacts was rooted in his early and enduring interest in the engagement of the white man and the Indian on the New England frontier.

Above and beyond the swords, tomahawks, armchairs, and teapots, Bill collected books about his objects, and about American history. When asked to lecture about his collection, as he often was in recent years, he always told the audience that his library was the most important single feature of his collection. Without his books, half the fun of collecting – the research on the newest acquisition’s maker, date, place of manufacture and use, and original owner, if known – would have been lost. Upon completing a deal, he would sit at the kitchen table for hours with his books open all around him, piecing together a story. When information wasn’t available in secondary sources, he turned to primary ones, frequently acquiring letters and period documents pertinent to his current project. He was often then compelled to write an article on his findings so that he could share what he had learned with the world.

Bill was fortunate in that he was able to build a life around the objects he loved. And it is fair to say that the world is just as fortunate, as his contribution to the scholarship of American history has enhanced and added color to our knowledge of the lives, occupations, and preoccupations of early Americans. His curiosity, intelligence, and knowledge inspired immense respect and admiration in us, his family, as well as in his colleagues, many of whom became close friends. To know his collection is, in large part, to know Bill, and thus it is with both great sadness and delight that we see it offered here for the next generation to love.

Was Carrington Backsticking in the 1870s? YES!

And, on another page from the "There's Nothing New Under the Sun" book, it looks to me that champion drummer A.R. Carrington had mastered backsticking (at least right-handed backsticking) and a few other tricks we haven't seen recently (e.g., a 5-stick solo) as early as the 1870s as depicted in the bottom middle image of this collage from that period.

From the digital collection of the New York Public Library.

Until this blog's editor saw and studied of the above print, it had been commonly thought that backsticking originated in 1938 based on the work of Joe Marrella who wrote in "The Baron of Backsticking" (which originally appeared in the December 2007 edition of Drum Corps World (Volume 36, Number 15)) as follows:

Believe it or not, BackSticking was developed in 1938 by its creator as a method to improve a drummer’s left hand. The first BackSticking exercise was accenting triplets. The technique was first taught to the Air Force snare drum section in 1958 by my dear friend, my mentor, my instructor, and the person most responsible for my success in drum corps, as well as scores of others.

His name is John Dowlan. To me, he is the “Baron of BackSticking”.

However, notwithstanding Joe Marrella's worthy addition to drumming source material, it is now clear that some form of the technique was practiced by A.R. Carrington some 60 years ealier than 1938, in the 1870s, as evidenced by the drawing illustrating Carrington's right hand in the middle of a backsticking flip. That is beyond argument.

See also "Backsticking -- A Drumming Technique Institutionalized by John Dowlan",this blog, December 28, 2008.

Related Information:
Also, see advertisement, column 5 in the July 19, 1879 edition of the New York Clipper, p. 185 advertising the appearance of A.R. Carrington, Champion Drum Soloist, among 75 artists performing at the National Theater in Cinncinnati that season.

And, see the Utica New York Observer, July 3, 1878:

Prof. A.R. Carrington divided the honors with Mr. Russell. His first appearance was with a splendid snare drum, which he played with piano accompaniment. The manner in which he handles the drum-sticks is something marvelous, and the musical effects produced are wonderful. During his most rapid performance a drum stick would be seen whirling in the air, or would be thrown from behind up under one leg, and caught, the most exact time being kept the while. It was reserved for the Professor to close the entertainment with his "Points of War." [Ed. Note: "Points of War" is also known as "Three Camps" according to "Drummers from the Past", by Jack Lawton. But "Points of War" may have referred to one or more other pieces, possibly in the Camp Duty. See, e.g., The Demon Drummer of Tedworth; "Soldiers of the English Civil War (1)" by Keith Roberts, Angus McBride, Osprey Pub., at p. 49. Points of war are referred to as "signaled commands", different from the Camp Duty in "Drum Calls" by Jeff Nordin and Charles Knutson, part of Clann Tartan Manual, Edition VII, edited By Maeve Kane.] On this occasion he had the addition of a bass drum placed two chairs at his side. The scientific drumming in this piece is not to be described. To one who has not heard it, it would seem utterly impossible that so vivid a picture of army [movements?], concluding with a severe battle, could be given by the means employed. With the aid of the synopsis printed on the program, it was not difficult to follow the often different features to the end. The clock struct ten but the audience followed him attentively to the close. We would be pleased to receive another visit from the champion and charming drummer of [Shiloh?].

Note: The 5th edition of The Chicago Blue Book (1894) (self-described as "a book containing a list of fashionable addresses") lists a Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Carrington residing at 645 Adams St., Chicago.

Historic Drum in Anoka County History Center

Drum donated by Richard Sorensen to Anoka County History Center (Minnesota)

Although the drum pictured is described as a "huge Revolutionary War drum", judging by the relative size of the drumsticks exhibited with the drum (which one could assume are somewhere in the vicinity of 17 inches in length), the drum is not of the size commonly associated with field drums of the late 18th century (e.g., 20 to 22 inches in diamter and height). Rather the drum appears to be more Civil War era (possibly, although the relatively modern snare strainer, which admittedly could have been added recently, bespeaks early 20th century).

The shell appears to have two (and possibly three) lines of tacks and is accompanied by a Civil War style neck sling. The rope is also machine made (20th century).

The tacks appear to be iron, rather than copper so the shell could be (probably is) older than the sling, rope and snare mechanism. It appears that over the years, this drum has received "upgrades" to keep it playable which suggests that it may have seen a fair amount of use by a number of different drummers.
