Charles C. Clapp 1861-1862 Drum Maker

eBay seller rbrtram60ni ( 120) is offering item no. 180449003321 described as follows:

I'm listing a wonderful period untouched Civil War Drum, that is all original including the heads of the drum. It does need a little TLC though. A little re-stringing would make it look alot nicer. It does have the maker's mark, that you can see through the peep-hole that I took a picture of. The maker is Charles C. Clapp, who was out of Boston Ma. He had contracts in 1861-1862 to supply several Massachusetts militia units with bugles and drum heads.

US Civil War Era Union Army Military Combat Drum. The dimensions are 16 3/4" in diameter by 14" tall. The maker that can be read thru the weep hole reads "Robert W. Warren". There is a small hand written label below that we cannot read. The heads show use and wear. The top one reads in hand written ink "RWW Geneva". The drum has the standard brass tacks in place. It is properly wrapped with the rope and leather tensioners. The wood is very fine. Overall low excellent condition.

GAR Civil War vets fife drum 60+ men

eBay seller obscuranta ( 3711) is offering item no. 290386461928 described as follows:

Here is a very nice mounted photograph, the mount measuring 11 x 14, the photo apx 7 1/2 x 9 1/2", only slight foxing on the photo and the mount, blind stamped on the bottom by the studio "Miller", and featuring between 60 and 70 men, most of whom look old enough in this early 1900s photo to be actual Civil War vets, almost all of them with the GAR insignia. This came from the life estate of a life-long collector, and is not identified at all, and is probably New York State.

DRUMMER BOYS FROM OLD SCHUYLKILL COUNTY

Source: "Schuylkill County Pennsylvania Military History" (blog), "DRUMMER BOYS FROM OLD SCHUYLKILL COUNTY", July 23, 2009.

FIRST DRUMMER BOY TO ENTER WASHINGTON.
Photo of A Schuylkill County Drummer Boy Early

Musician Albert F. Bowen from Pottsville a musician drummer boy from the Washington Artillerists was the first drummer for any volunteer organization from the north to enter the city of Washington, on April 18th, 1861.

He was presented with a drum that was appropriately inscribed dealing with the event. Bowen 20 years of age also reenlisted in the 48th Pennsylvania Band and served with the band until the band was mustered out on August 18th , 1862.

DID POTTSVILLE, HAVE THE YOUNGEST SOLDIER TO ENLIST IN THE CIVIL WAR?
The Story of Robert L. Wright
It is interesting to note that during the Civil War 1861-1865 Pottsville, Pennsylvania has laid claim to a few firsts. Pottsville sent out the first troops to defend the nation, the Washington Artillerist and the National Light Infantry. Pottsville lays claim to having to the first man to shed blood in the Civil War, Nicholas Biddle. And Pottsville had more soldiers in proportion to the population than any other city in the North. Pottsville also claimed to have the youngest soldier in the Civil War. No matter how you look at it Pottsville has served the country well.

Back in 1883 the Pottsville Chronicle ran a short story on a 34 year old man who was living in Pottsville and laid claim to being the youngest soldier in the Civil War to enlist. He enlisted at the age of 14 years and 8 months.

This fellow was unusually tall for his age and easily passed for a boy of 18, which, in his eagerness to join the rank of boys in blue, he gave his age. He carried a musket during the remainder of the war, and according to his comrades there was not a better soldier. He asked the paper not to give his name or claim him to be the youngest soldier but the Pottsville Chronicle wanted to back him in his claim.

Now this subject of who was the youngest soldier to enlist in the army during the war has many claims across the country. And not to be out done the Miners Journal from Pottsville offered the story about Pvt. Robert L. Wright.

Somebody wrote to the Pottsville Miners Journal that the proper person to be considered the youngest in the Civil War was a Robert L. Wright son of Jonathan Wright Esq. of Pottsville he was born on April 23, 1849 and enlisted under Captain John T. Boyle, September 16, 1861 in company D, 96th Pennsylvania Regiment. And was really only 12 years and 4 months old when he enlisted, younger by two years than the person spoken of in the Chronicle.

What is more, on the 17th day of May , 1864, when he (Wright ) was only 15 years old he was awarded the duty of “Mounted Orderly to General Emory Upton” for gallant and valuable service and served as an orderly in the 2nd Brigade Headquarters First Division, Sixth Corps.

Tragically on the 28th of February, 1865 Robert was standing on the Mine Hill Railroad, when he was tragically struck by an engine and thrown across the track, the engine and sixty coal cars of coal passing over him. He was not quite sixteen years old when he met his untimely death leaving behind him a record excelled by few. General Upton, in a recommendation to Secretary of War Stanton, paid him the high compliment of proposing him for a cadetship at the Military Academy at West Point. General Upton spoke particularly of high praise for Wright.
Roberts obituary stated:

"It becomes our painful duty to record the death of Robert Wright of this Borough which happened accidently on the morning of February 28th. The young lad was employed at his fathers operation near West Wood, a short distance from this place. On the morning in question having just returned from Schuylkill Haven, on a coal train, he stood on the tracks gazing up the road at the receding train, when unperceived by him another engine and train came gliding along behind him, and before he was conscious of its presence, knocked him down and passed over his body.

His uncle and others standing near, seeing the impending danger, gestulated and hallowed to him to take care, but owing to their voices being drowned in the rattle of the trains they were unheard, and in a moment, without warning, the brave spirit of the boy was ushered into eternity."

Robert was bright and intelligent lad with understanding far beyond his years, being not quite 16 at the time of his death.

General Upton spoke of Wright's bravery at the Battle of Winchester, of how he, “when he was entrusted with the most important orders and delivering them with promptness and understanding far beyond his years” The General remarked that he had seen him frequently under fire where he displayed the most extra ordinary courage. Major General Candy endorsed, the recommendation for the appointment to West Point adding that he looked upon him as a boy of extraordinary promise, and mentioned particularly his behavior at Spotsylvania and near Hanover. Major General Phil H. Sheridan also testified to the boy’s bravery and intelligence and urged his appointment. “He is a bright and very brave boy and should be helped, and his good deeds acknowledged by the government.” This appointment was daily expected, when the boy was suddenly removed by so an unfortunate accident. When General Upton learned of his death he sent a lengthily and affecting letter of condolence to the parents of the young soldier.

Another story attesting to the bravery of young Robert was written in the Miners Journal of March 28th , 1863 and reads as follows:

A DRUMMER BOY’S FEAT
Among the many incidents narrated of the daring and heroism displayed in our army, we have not heard of any which we think more deserving of note than that performed by a mere lad of thirteen years, from our own borough, connected with the 96th Regiment, Under Colonel Henry l. Cake, as we have learned it from those connected with the command. It appears that Robert Wright, son of Jonathan Wright Esq. a drummer boy, having possessed himself of a secesh horse after the Battle of Antietam, rode some distance from the camp, and espying a rebel soldier(a fine stalwart fellow) lying upon the ground, dismounted, stole quietly to his knapsack, and on opening it discovered two pistols, one of which he took, and then awakened his man, ordering him to surrender. The Rebel made a move towards his gun, which was a short distance off, when young Wright ordered him to halt or he would shoot him, and actually brought him in a prisoner into the camp of his regiment. The uproarious demonstrations of the soldiers when he was seen riding into camp with his prisoner before him, can better be imagined than described. We learn that for this act he has been deservedly promoted by his Colonel to the rank of orderly at his headquarters.

The letter from General Upton, with all the others named above , were still preserved by the parents of Robert in 1883 and his parents said they would never part with them for any amount of money. I wonder today were these letters are?

So according to the Pottsville Miners Journal Pottsville could and should lay claim to having the youngest soldier that enlisted in the war, in the person of Robert L. Wright.

CANINE AFFECTION ROBERT WRIGHT'S DOG
When Robert came home from the army, he brought with him from Virginia a terrier dog. Great affection existed between Robert and his dog. When the unfortunate accident happened which resulted in his death, and his body was taken home, it was with great difficulty that the dog could be prevented from springing on the body to lick it and exhibit other marks of affection. From that moment the dog commenced to pine, refused food, and on the Thursday following Robert’s death the dog died, unquestionably of grief for the loss of his master. It is a remarkable and touching instance of canine affection.

One can only wonder what deeds this boy could have accomplished if he had gone on to West Point and served his country as an officer.

HIS DRUM WAS NICELY VARNISHED AND LOOKS LIKE NEW
Private Andrew J. Snyder a 5ft-1-½ 16 year old from Pottsville and a member of Company H 48th Pennsylvania Regiment wrote home to his family on May 27th, 1863 while stationed with the regiment at Lexington, Ky.

“We have a nice place here and are well contented. The people like us very much and say that this is the best behaved regiment that had ever been here. A short time ago our regiment got marching orders and the 1st Tenn. (Union) was sent here to believe us of this duty, but when the people found out that we were going to be sent away, they got up petition signed by the Mayor, a Judge and hundreds of the best citizens and told General Wilcox and asked him to keep us here, because we kept ourselves so clean and behaved so well. General Wilcox telegraphed General Burnsides to know whether he could let us stay, and General B telegraphed back that he might. We had our knapsacks packed an everything ready to march, but when they told us that we should stay we cheered like everything. The ladies gave us lots milk and bouquets of flowers everyday. The girls give us drummer boys lots of pretty flowers. I never saw such a nice place as this. It’s just like a garden all about here.

We had a big fire last Friday, which destroyed one of our largest hospitals, but we got all the sick and wounded out safe. The ladies helped to carry them out of danger, and were very kind to them. We worked hard, but could not save the building.

"We have lots of rebel prisoners in our jail. They are hard looking set; dirty and lousy as can be seen. Our boys go out scouting and capture lots of Rebs and horses.

Major Wren resigned and went home the other day. We are very sorry, nearly all the men cried. He cried too. He was a good kind officer. He is a brave man too.

I have my drum nicely painted and varnished, and it looks like a new one. I keep as hearty as a buck, and I am growing fat.

Andrew J. Snyder

Irish Brigade Drum

The sound of a drum can cut through the din of war -- through shouting and shooting and chaos. This drum was carried by the regiment first organized as the 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, later to be known as the Fourth Irish Regiment of the Second Brigade, First Division, II Corps -- the "Irish Brigade." At Fredericksburg, the men of the Irish Brigade placed sprigs of green boxwood in their forage caps to distinguish them from all other units. Contemporary reports from Confederate officers note the good fight put up by the Irish Brigade, but the grim fact is that they sustained the highest number of casualties they would suffer in any single engagement of the war. Faugh Ah Ballaugh is Irish for "Clear the way!"

Civil War Museum of Philadelphia

The Civil War Museum of Philadelphia closed the doors of its old museum in 2008, in anticipation of building a new facility, with a planned 2011 opening. That new museum has been delayed until 2014. In the meantime, the Civil War Museum will partner with the Gettysburg Foundation, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, and the National Constitution Center to ensure that parts of the collection will be seen by the public during the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War which begins in 2011.

1863 Drum Played by James K. Hall, Made by Esex Arnold, Little Falls, MN

At 18 years of age, James K. Hall enlisted in Company K, 143d Indiana Volunteer Infantry and mustered into service as a muscian on February 4, 1865. This was his drum. When it was found that he had taught school and was a skillful accountant, Hall was made a company clerk. This chagrinned him throughout his life -- he had three brothers who saw battle, two of them were badly wounded. The 143d mustered into Federal service on February 21, 1865, and was stationed in Tennessee, where it remained until well after the end of the War; being mustered out at Nashville on October 17, 1865.

After the War Hall returned to Loogootee. He died in 1934.

Civil War Drum in Sauk County (WI) Historical Society

Civil War snare drum used by Charles Junge. It is said to have the signatures of his buddies inside.

Frank Pettis (1850- 1918) was eleven when he enlisted in the Union army as a drummer boy during the Civil War. At the age of twelve he began military service with his father and served from February 22, 1862 to August 9, 1865.

Pettis was present for every battle his unit was engaged in - from Suffolk, VA, and Newberne, NC to the sieges of Richmond and Petersburg.

After the war, Pettis returned to Reedsburg and helped in his father’s tailor shop. When he was 20, he became a miller.

He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and the Reedsburg Drum Corps until his death on August 15, 1918. At his funeral the Reedsburg Drum Corps, with muffled drums preceded the hearse to Greenwood Cemetery where he is buried.

Note: Curiously, there is a Frank Pettis, civil war drummer, just about the same age, mentioned in Ancestory.com, a geneological website but from New York:

Frank Pettis b. abt. 1851 Binghampton, Broome Co, New York. He served in the civil war as a drummer boy From New York.

Reedsburg's Civil War Drummer Boy Buried Here
By Dorothy Douglas Parent

Frank Pettis (1850-1918) was eleven when he enlisted in the army as a drummer boy during the Civil War. At the age of twelve he began military service with his teacher, Captain A. P. Ellinwood, in the 19th Infantry, Company A. He served from February 22, 1862 to August 9, 1865.

Pettis was with his Captain in every battle in which their unit was engaged — from Suffolk, VA and Newberne, NC to the Siege of Petersburg and on to Richmond, where the colors of his regiment were the first to float from the Confederate capital building, Richmond, VA.

After the Civil War, Pettis returned to Reedsburg. First he helped in his father's tailor shop, but at the age of twenty learned the miller's trade. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Reedsburg Drum Corps until his death on August 15, 1918. At his funeral the Reedsburg Drum Corps with muffled drums preceded the hearse to the Greenwood Cemetery where he was buried near his Captain.

Pettis left five children. One of his direct descendants, Richard Curtis Knight, lives today (1998) near Rock Springs.

Civil War Drum in Harrisburg Museum

The information in this post was taken from a post titled, "Using Art to teach about the Civil War pt. 1," in a blog titled "Teaching the Civil War with Technology" whose blogmaster visited the [Pennsylvania] state museum [in Harrisburg where he viewed] paintings *** by Peter Rothermel. The largest, ... "The Battle of Gettysburg" is 16-3/4 feet high and 32 feet long. It's HUGE!. According to a sign near the painting it was unveiled on December 20, 1870 and it depicts the event popularly known as Pickett's Charge. There are numerous historical figures located within the painting such as Union General G. Gordon Meade.

Here are some photos ... of the painting and display at the ... museum.

The previous three photos show the drum that served as a model for the one focused on in the painting, a photograph of Rothermel and invitations to the unveiling of the painting.

***
Note the drum in the bottom center of this picture. It is the same as the one in the display case.

As of early Sunday morning (Dec. 20, 2009), bidding on this relatively inconsequential and, possibly misdescribed European drum is approaching $600. What's all the fuss about?

It's all being driven by eBay bidder c***c( 268) who appears to have an insatiable appetite for things Civil War. A glance at the bidding history reveals that c***c( 268) has a high bid in that's being nudged up by r***c( 126) (whose own bidding history reveals that he too has a taste for things Civil War, but whose recent eBay purchasers a fewer in number by far than those of c***c( 268)).

Funny thing is that this drum MAY NOT BE CIVIL WAR!!!!!!!! It's foreign, and it's more recent. Well, at least that's the opinion of the blogmaster and at least one other reader, Will Chappell.

Reader Will Chappell, recognized drum expert, builder, collector and restorer had this to say about the drum:

The little blue drum on ebay looks like it's 20th century French or Belgian, maybe late 19th century at best. Even if it were old enough to be "Civil War Era," as described by the seller, I don't see someone importing a child-sized drum from Europe.

The distinguishing characteristics:

1) Brass European box style snare strainer with single strand of gut
2) Circular hole for snare gate
3) Metal capped sticks with long beads
4) Triangular ears

I can't believe how high people are bidding. What do you think?

[Below is] a photo of the sticks that came with my [French] Couesnon-- very similar design. The modern Belgian makers also put their initials on their brass box strainers. See http://www.tambourdegille.be/marques_futs.htm for examples.

And here are some photos of my Couesnon:

And now the drum that causing all this fuss:

eBay seller the-gunsmith ( 275) is offering item no. 120506138648 described as follows:

Fantastic condition Civil War drum with drumsticks.

This drum is slightly smaller than most of the "regulation" drums I've seen. It measures 13" across the head and 9 3/8" top to bottom. It's not small enough to be a child's drum and it is too well made to be a toy. I have heard these called cadet or militia drums.

Both heads are intact with no holes or tears. This drum could be played right now. It is missing 2 of the leather rope tensioners but the rest are there and in good shape. The snare strings are there but they have become unattached from one side. An easy fix if you want to do it. The body and rims were put together with tacks and both are still as tight as the day it was made. It still has the original rope.

I could not find any makers label or mark anywhere on the drum. Usually, the label was put on the inside of the drum but there is no peephole so you can see inside. The only marks are the initials "BH" on the bracket.

The drumsticks are slightly shorter too. They measure 11 3/4" long. Both had brass caps put on the end.

This set came out of South Georgia and the drum and drumsticks supposedly have been together since the Civil War. That makes sense cause these drumsticks weren't cut down last week. Everything has a beautiful age to it. I know that an oral history isn't worth the paper it's written on but that's the story I got with the drum so I'm passing it on.

Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore, Legendary Civil War Bandleader, Father of the American Band

eBay seller bookmark6 ( 4521) is offering item no. 360219106110 described as follows:

G.A.R. Grand Military & Civic Ball
New Haven, Connecticut ~ May 15, 1873

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Original 19th Century engraved ephemera:
8-page Dance Program, with braided ribbon cord
Two tickets to the Ball; one with stub still attached
Stationary (?) Souvenir (?) ~ front has gold medal and beautiful typography commemorating "Our Country's Brave Defenders"
Some biographical information about bandleader Gilmore:
Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore was born on December 25, 1829 in Ballygar, County Galway, Ireland. After accompanying his father to a protest rally against the British rule in Athlone, Ireland as a member of the Ballygar Fife and Drum Band, Gilmore became enamored with the disciplined band. He was introduced to the great bandleader, Patrick Keating, who taught him classical music and trumpets. Flourishing as a musician, Gilmore left Ireland for Boston in 1848.
In America, Gilmore became the leader of the Boston Brigade Band and then the Charlestown Band. He became famous as a cornet soloist and joined the Salem Brigade Band in 1853, which at the time was regarded as the best in America. With the Salem band, Gilmore performed for the inauguration of President James Buchanan.
After returning to Boston, he reorganized the Boston Brigade Band in 1858, and founded Patrick Gilmore’s Band, which featured 2 woodwinds to each brass instrument. The ensemble was the model for what would become the modern concert band. April 9, 1859 was the date of the first performance by the Gilmore Band.
Over the course of his life, Gilmore wrote several marching songs (often under the pseudonym Louis Lambert) including “Good News From Home”, “We Are Coming Father Abraham”, “Seeing Nellie Home”, 22nd Regiment March”, “Sad News From Home”, “The Everlasting Polka”, “Music Fills My Soul With Sadness” and the definitive performance of Henry C. Work’s “God Save the Nation”. However it was after the Battle of Gettysburg that Gilmore’s biggest hit was written: “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”.
In 1861, Gilmore’s Band enlisted in the Union Army and in 1863, Gilmore was put in charge of training bands in Massachusetts, an honor bestowed upon him by Governor Andrews of Massachusetts. Gilmore would train, equip and send out 20 bands from Massachusetts. After his own service was completed, and the War came to a close, Gilmore was asked by President Lincoln to organize and perform a celebration in New Orleans. After the success of the performance, which included the use of a cannon for the first time, Gilmore received a letter of thanks from the President.
Inspired by the success of the New Orleans event, Gilmore organized a peace festival to celebrate the end of the war. Doubling the numbers of musicians and singers from the New Orleans affair (from 500 to 1,000 and 5,000 to 10,000 respectfully), Gilmore’s National Peace Festival was held in Cooley Square on the Boston Common in 1869. The festival was the biggest social event of the century in Boston and was even attended by President Grant and his cabinet.
In 1872, Gilmore traveled to Europe with his band. Making contact with European bands, Gilmore came back to the United States with the grandiose idea of a World Peace Jubilee, which was held in Boston in 1872. Although a financial failure, the Jubilee solidified Gilmore as a national musical figure and premiere bandmaster of the time.
In the late 1870’s, Gilmore created Gilmore’s Concert Garden (the first Madison Square Garden) in New York. He was also the bandleader for many national celebrations including the July 4th Centennial in Philadelphia (1876), opening of the amusement park on Manhattan Beach in 1879 and the Dedication of the Statue of Liberty in 1886.
Gilmore joined the 22nd Regiment Band in New York in the early 1880’s. With this band, Gilmore started the tradition in 1888 of gathering in Times Square at midnight on December 31 to celebrate the New Year. Gilmore and the Regiment Band would go to Times Square and at midnight, Gilmore would fire two pistols in the air to usher in the New Year.
Gilmore continued touring the nation with the 22nd until his death in 1892 from a heart attack. He was buried in Old Calvary Cemetery in New York. On the night of his funeral, a young bandleader named John Philip Sousa dedicated his performance in memory of the late Patrick S. Gilmore - in Sousa’s reference, “The Father Of the American Band”.
For more information about Gilmore, see the Patrick S. Gilmore Society website, a beautiful piece of work by Michael Cummings.
John Philip Sousa is generally regarded as "the March King" and the bandmaster who defined a standard of excellence for concert bands in America. But Sousa himself regarded Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore as the "Father of The American Band."
Among Gilmore's musical credits is "When Johnny Comes Marching Home".
Lyon & Healey “Monarch” snare drum
eBay seller andrewhorning ( 0 ) [N.B. No experience points -- watch out, be careful.] is offering item no. 260522335466, described as follows:
Undated Lyon & Healey “Monarch” snare drum. Skins in mostly good condition, and are original. The snare side has been patched, and is rough/ a little dried out. Leather tug ring sleeves replaced at some point, and the old cord also looks too good to be original. Rawhide snare cords original; one pair pulled through (original) leather retainer. Everything else is too good to restore, with a great museum patina.
I have a drum very similar to this in my collection, recently sympathetically restored by George Kubicek of Yonkers, New York:
Civil War Era Drum by William Kilbourn w/ Label
eBay seller phredsfind ( 179) is offering item no. 220525132398 described as follows:
This field size drum is labeled on the inside “ William Kilbourn, Successor to George Kilbourn, Manufacturer of , Bass and Snare Drums, Tambourines, Banjos, Toy Drums, & c., Patent Guitar Banjo, no. 147 Clinton Ave. Albany N. Y.” This same label is found on a Bass Drum 1864-1869 at The National Music Museum. This label was used toward the end or shortly after the Civil War. Overall size is 11 1/4 in. with a diameter of 16 3/4 in. The skins and ropes are missing from the drum body. One of the wood rings has shrinkage damage but the ring parts were saved and attached to the body with four small screws. The wood surface looks old and probably original. This would be good as a restoration project or left as is, with the label visible, for display.
VERY SAD LINCOLN IMAGE PUBLISHED DAY HE DIED Nast 1865
eBay seller proffwilly ( 2306) is offering item no. 270501146876 described as follows:
Nineteenth Century "Political Cartoon"
by Thomas Nast
Very Tragic 1865 Image
of
ABRAHAM LINCOLN
PUBLISHED ON THE VERY DAY HE DIED
This item is one of my favorites of the Civil War period - maybe "favorite" is a poor choice of words, as it is a sad, even tragic item, concerning Abraham Lincoln. This is not a dramatic image, the depiction of one of the major events of the Civil War, nor is it one of the most artistic images to come from the pens of the wartime illustrators. Indeed, this is just a small political caricature (today we might say political "cartoon") attributed to Thomas Nast (but not even signed by him), printed in the year 1865. It shows President Lincoln writing (using as a writing platform a US Army drum), and the words he is writing are: "All Seems Well With Us."
What is tragically ironic about this is the date of publication, which is clearly shown at the top of the page on which this image appeared: April 15, 1865 - which was, of course, the very day Lincoln died!
Background:
As the Confederacy came to an end, early in April 1865 Lincoln had journeyed south to visit personally the defeated rebel capital and to congratulate the victorious Union troops. From City Point, Virginia he had telegraphed the simple dispatch: "All seems well with us." This was a serene message, conveying a calm sense of gladness that the nation’s bloodiest war was finally coming to an end. And that is how Thomas Nast portrayed the President, as a very relaxed figure showing little of the wartime stress that had for so long haunted his features. How ironic it was that the date of publication of this image would be the very day Lincoln died, and that the words would turn out to be so inappropriate to the events of that day.
A very special piece of historical Civil War memorabilia, relating not to any major battle, but to the "quirks" that sometimes bring dark humor to wartime situations, reflecting tragedy though intended to show a joyful occasion.
This image is referred to as a "wood engraving" because the plate it was printed from was made from an engraved block of wood - as opposed to, for example, a "steel engraving" or a "copper engraving" (which were printed from directly engraved metal plates). The "cartoon" itself measures about five inches by five inches, and it was printed in Harper’s Weekly almost a century and a half ago. This Lincoln image is on one oversize Harper’s page (15 inches by 10 inches), and this entire page is the item being offered in this auction. Along with the "cartoon," it contains a number of engraved ads, including one for a "pocket pistol" (see scans), and the entire page would make a great display piece.
This item is ORIGINAL - IT IS GENUINE, NOT A REPRINT OR "REPRO" OF ANY SORT! This item is in pristine condition and is a great piece for display!
Vintage Gretsch Marching Wood Rope Drum
eBay seller vanburen-girl ( 2172) is offering item no. 270499938431 described as follows:
I bought this from a man who was the original owner of this drum. He said he got it in the 1940s but it could have been made earlier than that. I think this drum would work well for reenactors of various wars or for a fife and drum corps or as a decoration. The drum still sounds great. Here are some attributes of the drum:
1. It measures 12 inches tall and 14 5/8 inches wide. The drumsticks, which came with the drum, are 16 3/4 inches long.
2. There is strap which goes around your neck so you can march with the drum.
3. There is a 3 inch tear in the lower drum head material but this does not affect the sound of the drum. There is also a 5/8 inch hole near the edge of the lower drum head. The top drum head is nice and tight with no holes or tears.
4. The wooden drum shell has a nice clear finish and normal wear marks for its age.
5. The ropes and leather holders of the ropes are vintage but in good condition.
Union Drummer Boy's Drum
c. 1862, Civil War Identified, Union Drummer Boy's Drum, Sticks, & Ambrotype Photograph of Veteran John Joseph Reiser.
This is an original, rare antique Civil War Union Drummer Boy's Drum, Sticks, plus an accompanying Ambrotype Photograph, of Veteran John Joseph Reiser. The Drum measures 17" wide x 9.25" high, being the personal property of John Joseph Reiser.
John Reiser was originally enlisted as a Drummer Boy into Company A, 4th Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry on Nov. 16, 1861 at Baltimore. He then transferred into Company G, 3rd Regiment, of the same Infantry where he served as a soldier for three years. He was so young, his mother persuaded his father to join the same unit, "in order to look after him," but they fought together in only one engagement, the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Va. August 3, 1862. In that conflict the son cared for his father, carrying him to a dressing station after finding him wounded on the field of battle. The drummer boy received a flesh wound at the Battle of Antietam, said to have been the bloodiest battlefield during any single day in the history of the world up to that time. He found his brother dying on the battle field and was with him until his death. Later he found his wounded father who lived long enough to return home where he later died of his wound.
John Joseph Reiser participated in nine major battles and numerous skirmishes, all of which are Recorded in Period Ink being Written as Documentation on the top skin of the drum. The Regiment was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 12th and 20th Corps. Army of the Potomac and Army of Cumberland, and Participated in the following engagements; Cedar Mountain, Va. August 3, 1862; Antietam, Md. Sept. 17th, 1862; Chancellorville, May 1 to 4th, 1863; Gettysburgh, Pa. July 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 1863; Wauhatchie, Tenn. Oct. 28th, 1863; Lookout Mountain, Resaca, Ga. May 8th to 13th, 1864; Marietta, Ga. and Kenesaw Mountain, June 9th to 30th, 1864; Peachtree Creek, Ga. July 19th, 1864; Atlanta, Ga. Sept. 2nd, 1864, and numerous skirmishes.
He was honorably discharged at the age of 19 under the command of General Sherman as a private on Nov. 12, 1864, at Chattanooga, Tenn. at the end of his enlistment. By the end of the war he was one of only two survivors from his Regiment and he had one of the longest service records of any Civil War veteran in Michigan. Reiser died Feb. 23rd, 1932 at the age of 85. The drum is said to be the very same one seen in the ambrotype, although it was later modified, by being reduced in size after the war, which was a common practice. A comprehensive family history will accompany this lot, including the drum, sticks and Ambrotype photo of John Reiser. The bottom drum skin is original and has a 5.5" tear and a second smaller star shaped tear. The Ambrotype Photo is dated underneath in pencil, "May 1862", "J. Reiser."
It is our best opinion that the Drum, Sticks, Ambrotype Photo and the ink writing documentation of battles recorded on the top skin of the drum is authentic and of the period. Not being present at the time, the possibility remains that the ink writing on the top skin may have been accomplished immediately after each battle, or at some point just after the war. A very unique collection with a remarkable heroic story of this very young, Union Drummer Boy.
More on the First Corps of Cadets and the 1834 Drum by H. Prentiss (Boston), Painting by Charles Hubbard.
Readers of this blog will recall an earlier post concerning a most beautifully painted 1834 drum by H. Prentiss of Boston, painted by American landscape artist and sign painter Charles Hubbard, "Historic Drum of the First Corps of Cadets, Massachusetts", this blog, March 19, 2008.
In this post, information from an old version of the Town of Winchester's official website was provided to us by Terry Cornett who restored the drum to playable condition, is republished to give us some insight into the military unit that commissioned and used the drum, as well as a famous progenetor, Col. William P. Winchester.
Terry Cornett wrote:
My first encounter with the “Prentiss Drum,” was in January of 2006, when I was contacted by Mrs. Kim McDowell, who was the owner. She and her husband ran Eagle Trading Company in Cottondale, Florida[, an antique shop].
When she first contacted me, she was attempting to restore the drum herself and needed rope and leather tuning ears to complete the task. I ordered “Eli Brown” style leather ears from Cooperman Fife and Drum Company, as well as 50 feet of Cooperman’s 4-strand linen cordage.
In July 2006, she contacted me [again], saying [that] she was unable to re-assemble the drum and asked if she could ship it to me for completion. I eagerly accepted the charge.
The drum arrived disassembled and I took inventory of the parts supplied and informed Mrs. McDowell as to what was required to restore the drum. Only one hoop was included, so I ordered a blank from Cooperman, which I would eventually shape and glue to fit the drum. I failed to measure accurately and the final drum now has a narrower hoop on the top head. I attempted to match the paint color with the bottom hoop.
The bottom hoop was broken in two, and required repair. I sandwiched a thin piece of brass (I believe) between the hoop plies and secured the two ends with screws. I then shaped wooden inserts to fill the gaps of lost wood. These can be seen in the accompanying photographs.
Unfortunately, the heads had been off the drum so long, the flesh hoops had warped to the point the heads looked like potato chips. The original skins were extremely thin, and attempts to remove them from the old flesh hoops and re-tuck on new hoops proved futile. I ordered new calfskin and new flesh hoops (unglued, so I could properly size them to the shell and counterhoops.
I repaired and reshaped the bearing edges, gluing and filling as necessary.
The drum did not have snares of any kind; but it was obvious, from observing the hoop, that snares were an original item. I utilized some old catgut and fashioned leather butt-plates to secure them. Mechanical snare strainers were not very common when this drum was made [1834]. Snares were often simply “clamped” in place by the counterhoops.
When I start reassembling the drum, I notice the McDowells had “antiqued” the leather ears by placing them in hot fireplace ashes. In fact, one had its leather tie burned in two. Luckily, I had them purchase 10 ears; but the drum only need 9.
The McDowells had always wanted to resell the drum but [thought that] the drum would not bring a good price unless it was complete. I went one step further and made a “player” out of it. I sent photos of the drum to the McDowells and they [thought] the rope was too white, so I replaced it with Hungarian hemp.
***
In 2008, I saw Ellis Mirsky’s FieldDrums blog and there was the drum I had restored. From the photograph, I could tell that the top hoop was the same as when I made it. *** [A]pparently the drum had changed hands a few times in the last couple of years. ***
I have attached photos I took upon arrival, during repairs and its completion. I regret I did not take more detailed photos. I am also including a document I sent the McDowells, which I copied from the Internet and highlighted a section about the Corps of Cadets.
COL. WILLIAM P. WINCHESTER
Who was the man for whom the Town of Winchester was named? Before being approached by the incorporation committee, Col. Winchester had no known association with the area, though he may have been known by reputation, he and his family having been prosperous and socially prominent for many generations.
William Winchester was a descendant of John Winchester of Kent Co., England, who left England with his wife Hannah and arrived in Boston in 1835, later living in Hingham and Brookline. John Winchester was apparently a successful farmer and a prominent citizen, being a surveyor and constable. His son John, from whom the Colonel descended, was also a prominent citizen of Brookline, being a signer of the 1704 petition to incorporate Muddy River as Brookline and becoming its first representative to the General Court. Other descendants also prospered. In the fifth generation, Edmund Winchester, father of our Colonel, was born in 1772 in Newton where his father was a rich farmer. He moved to Boston as a young man and married in 1796. When his father died in 1798, Edmund inherited the largest portion of his estate.
Becoming a merchant, Edmund Winchester espoused a profession which made him a wealthy man and part of the social elite in the young Republican nation. He was founder and senior partner of the firm of E. A. and W. Winchester(5) of Boston, wholesale merchants, and soap manufacturers. Eventually Edmund’s sons William and Stephen also came into the firm. In Boston business directories of the 1840s, E. A. and W. Winchester is listed under the categories “Salt Provisions Wholesale” and “Soap and Candle Manufacturers.” During Edmund’s time, a major customer was the U.S. Navy which contracted with the Winchester firm for its supplies for 30 years or more. At the dissolution of the firm in 1866, according to descendant Fanny Winchester Hotchkiss who wrote a family history, it was “one of the oldest and heaviest firms in Boston.”(6) Civically minded like his forbears, Edmund was elected a representative of the Massachusetts Legislature (1820-1822) and was a director of the Merchants National Bank of Boston (1833-1837).
William, Edmund Winchester’s eldest surviving son, was born on Nov. 9, 1801 in Boston. In 1823, he adopted the middle name Parsons by an act of the Legislature to distinguish himself from another William Winchester in Boston. Upon his father’s death in 1839, William Winchester succeeded his father as head of the firm. According to the family historian, “William P. Winchester was a prominent merchant, well known in Boston for his business ability and public spirit, also for his excellent judgment and great foresight in mercantile affairs. His untiring industry, firmness and self-reliance enabled him for many years to carry out with great success a large and important business, and at his death in 1850 was one of the wealthiest men in Boston, his estate being valued at upwards of half a million dollars, a large fortune for that period. He possessed more than a common share of natural shrewdness.”(7)
Married to the heiress Eliza Gill Bradlee, only daughter of Thomas and Mary Bradlee of Boston, William P. Winchester lived in Boston. Unlike some of his forbears, he did not get involved in politics. “Had he desired, [he] might have sought an official or political career, but...had no inclination and too much integrity to employ his wealth for the purchase of political favor.”(8) However, he did hold corporate posts, as a director of the Boston Exchange Company and a director of the Merchants Bank of Boston.
Col. Winchester was a very social man. “Unbounded in hospitality, he entertained in magnificent style. He was a warm-hearted, open-handed gentleman, generous and exceedingly popular.”(9) He was also man of culture. “He was an accomplished scholar in French, Spanish, and Italian and was also a discriminating judge and a liberal patron of the fine arts, enthusiastically fond of music, to which he gave munificent support,” and had a “love for painting.”(10) He no doubt shared his love of music with his uncle Amasa, who was one of the founders, trustees, and presidents of Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society.
One of Winchester’s known passions was yachting. This sport was quite the fashion for the merchant class of Winchester’s generation. William Winchester joined the yachting crowd when he bought the Mermaid from shipping magnate Benjamin C. Clark in 1836. In 1839 he launched the Northern Light, reportedly the longest and fastest yacht along the North Shore. It was painted several times by Fitz Hugh Lane, Robert Salmon, and others. “A crimson stripe slashed across the gleaming ebony of her topsides, her bends were varnished bright, and Northern Light’s crew of amateurs was uniformed by her convivial owner in white trousers, red shirts, and straw hats encircled by red bands with flowing ends that were stitched with her name in gold.
The standard ration before and aft the mast was a brandy punch of no uncertain character, called ‘bimbo.’”(11) Bimbo was made from a quart of brandy, six lemons, sugar, and a quart of water. “Its name and fame figured in a popular ditty that was often sung on Northern Light,” according to the Boston Globe (June 21, 1935).
“Possessed of much personal charm and endowed with an hospitable heart, Col Winchester’s delight was to take his friends down the harbor, first in the little schooner Mermaid, which he owned long enough to whet his sporting appetite for a larger and faster craft.” He also entered Northern Light in races at Newport, Nahant, and perhaps other places. According to one source, Winchester sold Northern Light late in 1849; according to another it was sold after his death in 1850. Either way, four men bought her and fitted her out for the California gold fields. She was lost in 1850 while trying to negotiate the Straits of Magellan en route to California.
Another of his social activities, the one from which he received his military title, was the First Corps of Cadets. This group originated as early as 1726 as the bodyguard to the royal governor of the Province of Massachusetts under the name Independent Company of Cadets. A cadet then meant not a student in a military college but a gentleman who entered the army without a commission to learn the military profession. Prospective cadets had to be nominated by a member and had to be able to afford to purchase their own uniforms and pay dues for the upkeep of the company.
The corps’ most famous commander was John Hancock who joined in 1766 and became commander in 1772. He, however, did not get along with the royal governor, Lt. Gen. Sir Thomas Gage, who dismissed Hancock. This outraged the cadets, whose custom was to elect their own officers, and they disbanded in August 1774. Two years later they reorganized and took part in various campaigns of the Revolution. In 1786, the group was reorganized with the name First Corps of Cadets (12) and was accorded the honor of continuing to serve as the governor’s official bodyguard. It was given the insignia and colors it still has, a sunburst star with the motto Monstrat Viam (“it shows the way”).
Between the War of 1812 and the Civil War, the heyday of the volunteer militia movement, the Boston corps served a mostly ceremonial function, particularly as an escort for very important persons, such as President Washington and Gen. Lafayette, when they visited Boston. The Boston Cadets frequently changed their uniforms to be the most splendidly clad unit in Boston. Because of the expense, only wealthy young men could afford to join, and the corps was very much a social club.
Winchester was elected a “fine member” of the corps in Feb. 1831. “Fine members” participated in all social activities of the corps but were excused from military duties on payment of an assessment or fine. They were required to have uniforms and were expected to turn out for parade. According to Corps records, Winchester was absent from the annual inspections in July of 1832 and 1833, but there is no further mention of him until 1842. That August some Maryland cadets visited, and there was a levee at his house at Franklin Place–i.e., a party with wine, music, dancing, etc.
Then, when he enlisted as an active member that October, he was immediately and unanimously elected Lt. Colonel (the rank of all the corps’ commanders). According to the Cadets’ museum, he probably bought his colonelcy, a common practice in the militia companies of the period which he could well afford. According to the treasurer’s report of May 1843, he gave the cadets a gift of $1,075 (purpose unknown, though probably a payment for something). He commanded the Cadets from October 1842 to August 1844. As an indication of how pressing his military duties were, Winchester took a grand tour of Europe in 1843, during the second half of his command years.(13) On the eve of his furlough, July 4, 1843, he invited cadets to accompany him on a fishing expedition on board Northern Light. The records indicate he was back from France by July 2, 1844, and he resigned on Aug. 5.
Since the corps was a ceremonial and socially elite body, it may be supposed that Winchester’s European tour was a success for the corps as well as Winchester himself, for he wore his uniform and bore his title to the centers and courts of Europe.
According to his diary, he was twice presented to King Louis Philippe. On the first occasion, “I was in a new Cadet uniform and introduced as Lieut. Col. Winchester, ‘Commander of the Body Guard of the Governor of Massachusetts.’ The King asked me what Corps I commanded, and I replied as above–he then said ‘it was a post of great honor.’ I said, in reply, ‘I appreciate it as such, Your Majesty.’”
On the second occasion, a grand reception at the Palace, he wrote, “The Duke of Nemours asked me, as follows–’What uniform is it, sir, that you wear?’ I replied, “The uniform of the Independent Corps of Cadets of Boston, the Body Guard of the Governor of Massachusetts,’ he immediately replied–’It is a splendid uniform, sir.’ I bowed to the Duke for the compliment, thanking His Highness for his good opinion of it and retired much gratified.”(14)
The cadets, of whom there were about 66 in the unit as of January 1843, must have liked their commander. They presented him with a silver pitcher and salver on the eve of his departure for his European trip. The corps commissioned a piece of music, Winchester’s Quick Step, “respectfully dedicated” to him and performed in a parade in January 1843 and again on his return from France in July 1844.(15) Though evidently a likable man, there is an indication that Col. Winchester could actually have been a terror at times. An intriguing note on the back of his Cadets membership card says, “Beat a Boston Editor nearly to death for lampooning his daughter’s wedding festival.”
About 1848-49, Winchester had built a grand summer home in Watertown, surrounded by beautiful grounds which extended to the Charles River so that he could sail his yacht to his own home.
Shortly afterward, at the age of 49, the Colonel died unexpectedly. He was interred in the family tomb at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
As noted above, the family had some correspondence with and gave gifts to the Town of Winchester but apparently had no other association with the town. However, two grandchildren of the colonel’s brother Stephen were born in Winchester, and, though the family apparently did not stay in town, the colonel’s great-nephew, Henry Winchester Cunningham donated a copy of a family history he compiled to the Winchester library.
13) Since the Colonel died in 1850, further history of the Corps is outside the scope of this history; however, it should be mentioned that the group did more than show off splendid uniforms on parade. The cadets served in the Civil War and all succeeding conflicts, except the Spanish-American War. In the 20th century it became part of the National Guard. Reorganized and redesignated many more times, it served as infantry, engineers, antiaircraft artillery, cavalry, armor, infantry again, and signal, and, after World War I, the Corps became a battalion of military police. In 1996 it consolidated with the Military Police as the Headquarters Detachment, 211th Military Police Battalion.
The Moeller Drums of the Mount Kisco Fire Department Ancient Fife & Drum Corps
Mount Kisco Fire Department
Ancient Fife & Drum Corps
Mount Kisco, New York
One of the exceptional sights, even to untrained eyes and unskilled ears is the Grand Republic Drum set made by the renowned Sanford Augustus Moeller. “Gus” is widely considered to have been one of the foremost ancient drum makers in the country. He passed away in 1960 at the age of 82. His legacy of drums, particularly in the fife and drum community, can unquestionably be seen in the Mount Kisco Ancient Fife and Drum Corps. The 10 snare, 3 bass, hand painted set is believed to be, and is recognized as, the largest complete Moeller set still in tact in the United States. The Ancients are very proud and thankful that Gus Moeller was, and will forever be, an integral part of the Corps history.
The drums possess unique hand painted images of Native Americans, of which no two figures are alike, with stylistic and artistic nuances attributed to the individual drum. Gus handcrafted the set using ash with calfskin heads, linen rope and leather ears to tighten the drum head down. The delivery of the set took place between 1950-1953. Moeller took great pride in each drum he made, often delivering them in person. This enabled him to witness the enjoyment of the first play by the new owner. Moeller also invited buyers to come to his workshop in Mt. Vernon, NY to observe the handcrafting and love he put into each drum.
In a letter Mr. Moeller wrote to Mr. Hugh Quiqley of Wallingford, CT in 1954, who had just taken home a Moeller Grand Republic Drum, Gus pointed out that “There have been only three organizations given Grand Republic Drums and happily they have been organizations of EXCELLENT character and reputations…The three Corps now owning them are the Chas. T. Kirk, F.D. Corps of Brooklyn, The North Branford, CT. Fife and Drum Corps of North Branford, CT and The Mount Kisco Fife and Drum Corp. These organizations are certainly all HONORABLE.”
Howard F. Reiff wrote an obituary on Mr. Moeller, revealing several attributes that those who had dealings with Gus were certainly aware:
“The man himself was a phenomenon, known for his eccentricities and straight from the shoulder remarks. To purchase Moeller Drums was a chore in itself. One had to go through a third degree…for you had to be able to play well to qualify! I remember when a Corps placed an order for a whole set of these drums and was told that Gus would accept the order only after he had attended one of their rehearsals to make sure the drums would be used properly. I refer to the original Mt. Kisco Corps. The drums were delivered and are still used today…they are as good as the day they were delivered some years ago.”
Carl Fischer Drum
eBayer mmmguitarman ( 2592) is offering eBay item no. 120499776554, described as follows:
Vintage 1900's Carl Fischer 16" Rope Marching Drum
This is a vintage 1900's era, Carl Fischer 16" (Cooper Square, New York) 'Rope' Marching Drum. Used. Shell depth is 10". 3-ply mahogany shell. Maple hoops. Snare throw-off looks to original, though not positive (see photo). 'String' snare strands. The snare side head is a Remo Clear Ambassador. The top head looks to be a Remo 'Fiberskyn' (not sure). Cotton rope is worn and will not 'tighten'. 10 original string 'lugs'. Two original string sliding tighteners ('hide' part of tighteners is worn). Shell is out of round (up to 1/4") on both sides. This drum needs some work in order to be able to play it properly.
19th-Century Rope Tension Snare Drum
eBayer excelsiorcornetband ( 811) is offering eBay item no. 260516656898, described as follows:
This drum is postwar and probably dates from the 1870s-1880s. It is of the correct pattern for a "period-correct" Civil War reenacting impression. It is made of dark-stained laminated maple or ash, with oak tension hoops. The shell measures 16" x 11". The overall height is 12.5". There are 20 original period iron hooks (2 with hanger loops) and a very nice original snare strainer. The heads are calfskin and are either original or of the period. There is no label inside, so I cannot tell who the maker/seller was.
CONDITION: It is not playable as-is--it was rigged for display only. Both heads are damaged, see pictures. Neither can be made playable. (I would recommend a Remo FibreSkyn batter head and a Remo Renaissance snare head if you want to restore it for playing.) The ropes are nylon boat line; the tugs are soft leather, the snares are waxed artificial sinew, and the snare butt is soft leather. These four items are not functional and were for display only; they (plus the heads) must be replaced with proper fully functional replacements if you want to play it. The shell and hoops are in very good shape with no cracks or significant damage. The upper hoop has a minor warp.
PLAYING QUALITIES: The drum was rigged for DISPLAY ONLY and is NOT PLAYABLE as-is; it will need a full restoration. I can recommend an excellent drum restorer who is also a Civil War reenacting drummer, if you like.
ACCESSORIES: None.
THE STRAIGHT DOPE: This drum would be a good choice for a reenactor looking for an inexpensive original 19th-century drum to restore and play. It needs work but it will look good and probably play well once it's restored to playing condition.
